After all, this isn\u2019t just a mode of transportation. It\u2019s also a home, vacation lodging, and possibly your retirement plan. That\u2019s why it\u2019s essential to consider all the options and factors involved in this decision before leaping in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. What\/Where\/Why?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The place to start this process is with your goal for buying the RV and the function it will serve, says <a href=\"https:\/\/heathandalyssa.com\/\">Alyssa Padgett, who, with her husband Heath<\/a>, has co-authored several books about RV living. \u201cWhy do you want an RV, and what will you use it for? The term \u2018recreation vehicle\u2019 covers everything from a motor home to a pop-up trailer to a van, so as you\u2019re figuring out which one you will need, it\u2019s important to first decide where you will take your vehicle, and how often you will use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\nenvision using your new RV to take occasional camping trips or seasonal cross-country\nroad trips, you might want something smaller, like a class C or B vehicle, or a\nvan, she says. But if you\u2019re looking to jump into a full-time RV lifestyle,\ntrading in your bricks and mortar house for life on the road, then you might want\nto shop for a 40-foot travel trailer or fifth wheel rig that\u2019s built for\neveryday use and will feature more amenities and comforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo-credit-Armosa-Studios-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"family in luxury RV\" class=\"wp-image-17083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.cubesmart.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo-credit-Armosa-Studios-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/staging.cubesmart.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo-credit-Armosa-Studios-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.cubesmart.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo-credit-Armosa-Studios-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/staging.cubesmart.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo-credit-Armosa-Studios-3-810x540.jpg 810w, https:\/\/staging.cubesmart.dev\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo-credit-Armosa-Studios-3-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo credit: Armosa Studios<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some questions to help you determine what RV is right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The amount of vehicle you\u2019re comfortable handling:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\nkind of car do you drive now? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\ndo you feel comfortable driving? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do\nyou plan to tow your RV (and do you have the right kind of truck to do so) or\nhave your RV tow your existing car? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do\nyou have room in your budget to buy an additional vehicle for transporting your\nRV if needed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The key family members involve<\/strong>d: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who\nwill be using the vehicle? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is\nit just you and a life partner? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or\nwill children and\/or a larger extended family join you on your travels? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally,\nthese answers may dictate the size and type of RV you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Destination(s):<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where\ndo you want to go? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the growing popularity of RVs, many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/about\/hobbies\/top-11-coolest-rv-campgrounds-to-explore-this-year\">RV campgrounds<\/a> can\u2019t keep up with increased demand, Padgett says. That means you might need to be prepared to boondock (or camp off the grid) or use public lands. In which case, you don\u2019t want to have a heavier rig, which is often prohibited on these lands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>RV Storage and Parking:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where\ndo you live? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another\nkey factor in determining type and model is parking and storage. \u201cMany\nhomeowner\u2019s associations prohibit you from parking your RV outside of your\nhouse,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/freeaswheeleverbe.com\/\">RV enthusiast and blogger<\/a> Tina Klinefelter. \u201cMaybe you have\na family member who will agree to let you leave it on their property, but if\nyou don\u2019t you might have to pay for parking.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re only planning to use your RV in the summer months, you\u2019ll want to find a safe, secure place where it\u2019s protected from the harsher elements (and from the snarky comments of neighbors), whether that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/vehicle-storage\/rv-storage\/\">indoor or outdoor RV storage<\/a>. Either way, you\u2019ll need to prepare the vehicle to sit unused, but with outdoor storage, you might want to consider investing in an RV cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The\nCost of an RV<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The price of an RV can vary wildly, ranging from $10,000 to $300,000, depending on the type, model, year, and other factors. If you need to purchase a second vehicle to tow or transport your RV, that\u2019s an added cost, as is the towing and braking system to connect the two. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember to factor in additional expenses such as RV insurance (about $300-$350 a year), accessories, and fuel both for driving (diesel is more efficient but more expensive than gasoline) and for heating and cooking. On the road, campground or RV parks will charge a nightly fee to park (as much as $100 a night). When you\u2019re not on the road, you\u2019ll need to pay for RV parking and\/or RV storage. CubeSmart\u2019s RV storage lease terms are flexible with month-to-month agreements that can be used for either temporary or long-term storage as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. New\nversus Pre-owned<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with\nany vehicle, used RVs for sale offer the greatest value and potentially the\nsafest investment, especially for new owners. For one, there\u2019s the simple\nreason that any new purchase will depreciate from the minute it leaves the lot.\nWith RVs, though, there\u2019s another reason, Padgett says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRVs are\nassembled by hand, typically by Amish people in Indiana, which is very cool,\nbecause you get this unusual craftsmanship. But because these are not made by\nautomated factories, often there are going to be little mistakes. With a new\nvehicle, you\u2019re more likely to come across one. Given the volume of RVs on the\nroad, it can be difficult to get service, and getting stuck somewhere while\nwaiting can quickly ruin your vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sweet\nspot, she says, is to find something between two and ten years old, which will\nstill be running well but will likely have the kinks worked out. However, pre-owned\nvehicles carry the risk of damage or wear. When purchasing a pre-owned RV, be\nsure to do a close inspection for water stains, mold, pests, and rust as well\nas tire strength. Ask questions about the vehicle\u2019s previous ownership and its\nhistory, including crashes and manufacturer recalls or any upgrades or repair\nwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Finding\nYour Floorplan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as you would in choosing a home, you want to be able to picture yourself living inside your new RV. For most RV users, the point of RV travel is to enjoy nature, and outdoor space is as crucial as the vehicle\u2019s indoor space. With a clever design, your vehicle will maximize the area around its walls to expand rooms for sitting and eating with back or side porches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slide-outs\non the rig can also expand the living space. \u201cThat was a number one\nconsideration for us,\u201d says Padgett. \u201cWe wanted a space that felt open, and not\nlike one narrow long hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Smart tip:<\/em><\/strong> <em>A common refrain from experts is to stand in the shower before purchasing an RV. \u201cIf you have to bend down when you\u2019re taking a shower, you\u2019re not going to be comfortable,\u201d Klinefelter says. \u201cBut they\u2019re getting smart in the industry and more and more you see bubble skylights in bathrooms. The same thing goes for the bed. Make sure you can fit and it\u2019s comfortable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kitchen layout, including counter space, sinks, and appliance placement can make or break functionality in a limited space. And while many RVs rely on slide-outs for more room, they can sometimes be less efficient than they would seem, says RV blogger Marshall Wendler of <a href=\"https:\/\/campaddict.com\/\">Camp Addict<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen models that look great when they\u2019re open, but when they\u2019re closed you can\u2019t access the bathroom. That\u2019s not great if you need to quickly pull over while you\u2019re driving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how many people will typically be along for the ride and who they are, you will want to take a hard look at how space is divided. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is there enough privacy? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where are the beds relative to other areas? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are the kids\u2019 bunk beds in the middle of the floor where they will be disrupted as others pass by? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can someone cook or use the shower easily while another person is sleeping?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. RV Features and Add-ons<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve decided on the basic model and floorplan it\u2019s time to home in on the fun details such as the features and accessories. On the basic side, most people plan to use the kitchen and bathroom in their RVs, reducing the need to stop during their travels. Whether you need basic functionality or bells and whistles like a tile backsplash, dishwasher, or stainless steel residential size refrigerator largely depends on how you envision using the kitchen. For many RV owners, laundry facilities are paramount, and many vehicles come equipped with washer\/dryer combos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\nhave a less restricted budget or you\u2019re looking for more luxury, today\u2019s RVs\noffer an impressive list of features, from fireplaces and solar showers and home\ntheater setups including projector, screens, and multiple speakers. Grand\nDesign RVs, for instance, offer walk-in closets, showers with glass doors, and\nLED awnings on many models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the market for RV accessories is ever-expanding, but there are two key items that new owners will want to consider purchasing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A\nportable RV generator can be extremely useful in many camping situations. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A\nwater pressure regulator to keep the flow at campgrounds in line with\nmanufacturer recommendations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><br>A great way to find the right RV for your specific needs is to sample a few, much like you would test drive a car, but for an overnight experience.
