If you\u2019ve decided to move heavy furniture yourself, or with the\nhelp of friends, it\u2019s best to be prepared. Moving heavy items incorrectly could\nrisk someone getting hurt \u2013 not to mention damaging your prized dresser or sofa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might be able to save money by not hiring a professional\nmover, but if you opt for the DIY approach, make sure you do it right.\nFollowing these eight simple tips can make moving big, awkward items easier and\nsafer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Plan the Move <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whether\nyou\u2019re moving home<\/a>\nor putting furniture into a storage\nunit<\/a>, it\u2019s a good idea to write down what needs to be\nmoved and when. This may seem like an obvious step but taking your time and\nthinking through every part of the move is important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about whether you\u2019ll need help from friends to move the object, and if so, note how many. Think about potential difficulties or dangers \u2013 for example, if you\u2019re moving a bed or sofa upstairs, it could be too narrow and risk getting stuck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\ncan create a mattress sling using a piece of rope. First, make sure it\u2019s much\nlonger than the mattress you\u2019re trying to move. Secure the rope underneath the\nmattress, then pull the rope out at each side to create handles. You hold one\nside and get a friend to take care of the other. You\u2019ll find it easier to keep\nyour mattress steady when using a sling, which should make the process much simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Use a Furniture Dolly <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Simple yet very effective, a furniture\ndolly<\/a> is often simply a wooden rectangle on four wheels. Lift your\nheavy furniture and position it so the center-most flat surface is sitting on\nthe dolly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrap edges and corners in mattress covers\nand furniture blankets. Or buy a roll of bubble wrap and tape up the edges of the\ndoorways you want to protect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
