Remember these?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you believe us if we told you everything old is new again? Well, as we recently explored in our <strong><em>Retro Revival<\/em><\/strong> blog, the always cool styles of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s are back in a big, big way in home d\u00e9cor and design. And in fashion, it\u2019s the early 2000s, turn-of-the-century vibe that has everyone excited and ready to go this summer. Just peep Julia Fox\u2019s lowest-of-the-low rise pants or the sudden resurgence of velour track suits on everyone aged 15 to 55 landing at LAX.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as we all know, styles are as\nfleeting as a cheap platform flip-flop. So let\u2019s explore how to ride this one\ninto its inevitable \u2013 if temporary \u2013 end, including what to amplify and what to\nskip all together. We\u2019ll also cover what to do with all of the rest of the more\ntimeless items you\u2019ve got in your closet while you indulge yourself with some\nof the trendiest pieces of the early 2000s era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Y2K Dressing is All About\nthe Silhouette<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/hand-shuffling-through-clothing.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19714\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Search the silhouettes of the late 90s and early aughts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> If there\u2019s one thing to play up in your Y2K lewk, it\u2019s the contrast between silhouettes. Many of the clothes of that time were made in almost comical proportions, like absurdly gigantic jeans (looking at you, JNCO) or baby-sized\nt-shirts, which Paris Hilton should be credited in the history books for\nsingle-handedly popularizing in Western culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to play with the forms to draw attention where you would like it to go, or to just create a bold, avant garde statement about the absurdity of those forms. The best part about Y2K fashion is that it&#8217;s easy to make a bit of a statement without saying a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the classic early 2000s\nlooks that fit this aesthetic include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baby t-shirts, cropped tank tops or otherwise tight, short tops and loose-legged jeans <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Miniskirts and boxy sweaters OR miniskirts with Uggs OR miniskirts with boxy sweaters and Uggs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low rise, flared pants or jeans with ribbed cardigans <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nThe\nlatest versions of these products for sale are slightly less extreme than the\noriginals \u2013 and a whole heap lot more expensive. So if you still have the\noriginals \u2013 or can find them in a sister\u2019s or brother\u2019s closet, a vintage store\nor online secondhand store \u2013 definitely start there rather than buying new. And\nif you happen to find an original Fendi Baguette bag like Carrie used to swing\naround on <strong><em>Sex and the City<\/em><\/strong> all the time, well then \u2014 you\u2019ll be Y2K\nfashion royalty.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of characters, you don\u2019t\nwant to look like you\u2019re wearing a costume of course, so tread lightly \u2013 but\nmess around with the look until you find something that comes across as both\nfresh and authentic. A lot of what the early 2000s was about was finding your\nown way and expressing yourself. It combined a new femininity with the\ngenderless form of grunge. And it was led by women \u2013 Beyonc\u00e9, Britney Spears,\nChristina Aguilera, Shakira, Paris Hilton \u2013 who were dressing in a way that no\none ever had before. Take a cue from their bravado and whatever you do, don\u2019t\ntake it too seriously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parts of Y2K Style to Skip<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/butterfly-hair-clips.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19713\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Butterfly clips &#8211; Keep or store?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOf course, as with any retro revival, there are parts\nof it that shouldn\u2019t see the light of day again. Parts that were so dastardly\nthat we can\u2019t believe they were even somewhat accepted by society once, and\nshould in no way be brought up to bat a second time.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any of the following\nin your plans for a Y2K style revival, please strike it from the list. After\nthe last few years we\u2019ve all had, none of us are strong enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Double denim.<\/strong> Looking at you, Timberlake. Never forget. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Layering dresses over jeans. <\/strong>Climate change may have put this absurd, somewhat uncomfortable and definitely unflattering one to rest forever. Buh-bye.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slappy platform mules and sandals.<\/strong> The ones that make noise when you walk?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adjectives in strange places.<\/strong> Let\u2019s just collectively ban those.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tight denim miniskirts. <\/strong>They hobble your legs and you can barely walk in them. Throw &#8217;em back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tiny, tiny bags that fit nothing.<\/strong> Great, except we need to carry things. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sticky lip gloss.<\/strong> Great, except every single one of your hairs will adhere to it until it all wears off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Glittery cream eyeshadow.<\/strong> Great, except it will slide down your face within minutes of applying it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Making Space for New Styles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/young-woman-organizing-clothes.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19716\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Keep some of the old and make room for the new.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trends are always fun to play\naround with.
