Freshening up your outdoor fall d\u00e9cor can be one of the more fun and rewarding parts of the season \u2013 or one of the duller and more stressful, depending on your situation. If you have no idea how to transition your porch and yard d\u00e9cor from summer to fall, it might tend to be pretty dull and stressful. There are certainly a lot of ideas out there, but it\u2019s hard to know how to put them in place \u2013 much less how to keep true to your own style (and budget!) while you do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never fear! The Storage Queens are here to sort through the madness of outdoor d\u00e9cor ideas floating around!  We\u2019ve narrowed them down to three core design concepts \u2013 and we\u2019re talking more than cornstalks and pumpkins here, people. (Though, TBH, there are still plenty of cornstalks and pumpkins.) We\u2019re talking the big thoughts to think through before<\/em> you hit up your nearest stores and garden centers: color, dimension, and scale. But don\u2019t worry, we sprinkled in plenty of \u201cget \u2018er done and get \u2018er done today\u201d tactical stuff too.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We ruled out\nall the ones that required an art degree and\/or an unexpected inheritance, to\nmake these as immediately actionable as possible.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Color Scheme: Keep It Simple, Sweetie<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The easiest outdoor fall d\u00e9cor hack of them all might just be\ndetermining a color scheme. This you can even do from the comfort of your\ncouch. And the benefits of starting with a color scheme are enormous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. It\ncreates a structure for your look.<\/strong> You can\u2019t go haywire buying\npretty things at the garden center if you know you have to stick to a certain\npalette. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. It looks\nsleek to visitors and passerbys.<\/strong> No matter how low your budget,\nif you can pull off coordinated colors, it reads much more expensive than it\nis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. It nearly\nalways looks better than a hodgepodge.<\/strong> Remember\nthose color wheels from grade school? There\u2019s a reason we\u2019re drawn to certain\ncombinations, so might as well take advantage of what we\u2019re naturally drawn\nto..  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Speaking of color combinations,\nsome popular ones for fall yard d\u00e9cor this\nyear are the classic harvest favorites orange and green \u2013 as well as the\nupdated version: cobalt blue and orange. The classic black and white combo \u2013\nboth on its own and accented with boldly colored mums \u2013 is also showing up on\nporches and doorsteps all over.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If bold isn\u2019t really your style,\nyou\u2019ll be pleased to know that muted tones, like sage or pale purple, look\ngreat as well. You can find plenty of ornamental cabbage, speciality pumpkins,\nsquash, and mums to build out the look. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cream, light gray and other\nneutrals are also making a big impact this fall. You can pair them with\nearthier tones, like deep browns or tans, to add a bit more weight or leave\nthem on their own for a more delicate and ethereal vibe. One of the best\nexamples of this extremely natural look we\u2019ve seen is very light colored\npumpkins and other squash set atop earthenware crockery on steps.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A classic fall yard d\u00e9cor mistake we\u2019ve all made is not take all <\/em>the dimensions into mind when planning something out. An idea can seem absolutely perfect on paper \u2013 until you realize it\u2019s all knee-high, and no one can see it driving by. Or that it\u2019s tall enough, but it completely disappears from the side of the porch. This is why you need to consider your porch update from all angles and walk around it after it\u2019s installed to make sure you didn\u2019t miss anything obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Luckily, there are a lot of\ninteresting options available for building up plants and decor elements both\nvertically and horizontally. Some of the best, and most reasonably priced,\nideas we\u2019ve seen include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. Tree stumps <\/strong>(If you can get more than one, try for a variety of heights)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Hay or straw bales<\/strong> (aim to buy from local farmers if possible)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Simple Shaker boxes<\/strong> (or anything that looks hand-crafted and unadorned)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Old wooden crates <\/strong>(either painted to match or left rustic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Rusty bike<\/strong> (or rusty anything if it fits the vibe)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Earthenware crocks<\/strong> (these look best on stairs with plants, gourds or pumpkins on top)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Wooden ladder<\/strong> (perfect for holding lots of small items)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    8. Bench <\/strong>(any size or length can work)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    9. Terra cotta planters<\/strong> (turned upside down for additional height)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    10. Galvanized buckets and pails<\/strong> (turned on their sides for ornamental cabbage and gourds)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      \n\nYou\ncan use these elements to \u201carchitect\u201d your porch any way you\u2019d like. Imagine\ncrates of different heights with pots of flowers on top. A wooden ladder strung\nwith a garland of grapevines and bittersweet. Outdoor lights strewn between\ntree stumps of various sizes. Consider them the foundation for the plants and\nother decorative elements.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Play With Scale<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Our last core design concept to consider is scale. We love the idea in the picture above because it takes a huge number of mums and other flowers and plays them off the smallest baby pumpkins. You can make a big impact without too big of an investment by doing something similar (minus, perhaps, the huge amount of mums part). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Think\nabout placing similarly small pumpkins on your steps, railings, or ladder\nrungs. Or a massive garland above your front door and very minimal decoration\nanywhere else. If you\u2019ve already got a well built-up garden area or\nwell-furnished front porch, don\u2019t feel the need to go overboard on outdoor fall d\u00e9cor. A few artfully placed pieces\nor plants may be all you need to liven it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A quick\nway to add dramatic vertical scale is with cornstalks. Neatly gather a bunch\ntogether, tie them with either invisible wire or a large, visible ribbon, and\nplace them on either side of your door or porch entrance. You can also use them\nin planters to add a dramatic element of height. Corn husks are also a flashy\nway to add extra oomph to a trio of glass gem corn, and are quite eye-catching\nwhen woven into wreaths. Plus, it\u2019s all compostable at the end of the season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that you want to use your outdoor fall decor to set the tone for your entire home, so be mindful about choosing decorative and natural elements that really encompass the vibe that you want your guests to feel.
