Biophilia is\ndefined by Merriam Webster as the \u201chuman tendency to interact or be closely\nassociated with other forms of life in nature.\u201d When it comes to your living\nspace, however, biophilia is best represented as natural\ninterior design. Think plants (lots and lots of\nplants), in addition to natural\nshapes<\/a>, materials and colors. Taken\ntogether, all of this nature-inspired d\u00e9cor serves to calm the nervous system, increase productivity,\nand make your home, office or anywhere else you incorporate it a pleasant and\nserene place to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature-inspired interior design has been having a moment (or a series of moments) since the\nadvent of COVID-19 in 2020. Over the last few years, those of us stuck in our\nhomes for weeks or months at a time began to value the harmony and beauty of\nnature in a whole new way. While the concept itself was first written about in\n1984 by a biologist named E.O. Wilson, we are still just beginning to\nunderstand the benefits of biophilic design and the impact it can have on our brains and bodies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the\ndemand for interior biophilic design and nature-inspired d\u00e9cor has never been stronger. The design movement itself has\nevolved from its beginning (think a few houseplants scattered here and there\nand maybe a botanical print or two) to incorporate natural elements into every\naspect of our home and work lives. The scale has changed as well. Where once,\nwe might have been happy with just a smattering of natural (or even\n\u201cnature-inspired\u201d) elements, today\u2019s biophilic homes and offices show their intentions with big, bold\nstatements.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While individual houseplants are \u2013 and will likely always remain \u2013 core biophilic design elements, true adherents to the trend are taking that idea several steps further and installing living walls in their interiors. Living walls? If you haven\u2019t seen one in person, imagine an incredibly dense, lush, and compacted garden bed turned on its side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, vertical,\nhanging gardens<\/a> have been a mainstay\nof folks trying to grow flowers or vegetables in cramped outdoor spaces for\nyears. Living walls, on the other hand, are more focused on amplifying the\nimpacts of biophilic design interiors. Lasting anywhere from 4 to 6 years with proper\nmaintenance, these stunning pieces not only awe and impress \u2013 but often add mental\nhealth benefits<\/a> as well. Interacting\nregularly with plants is thought to reduce cortisol levels, stress, and\nanxiety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re\ninterested in adding a living wall to your home or workspace, there are a\nnumber of companies that sell kits for self-installation. For those of us whose\ngreen thumbs are more\u2026brown and wilted, there are also horticultural experts\nwho will come install the walls (or any other natural\ninterior design pieces) for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirror, Mirror: Multiply\nthe Effects of Your Nature-Inspired\nD\u00e9cor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another trend in biophilic interior design is using mirrors to multiply the effects of your nature-inspired d\u00e9cor efforts. The mirrors themselves can (and perhaps should) also be biophilic, with curvilinear shapes and naturally colored wooden frames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only will\nmirrors artfully reflect the flowers and greenery within your home, they also\nserve to dramatically increase the positive effects of natural light.
