1.\nDetermine Your Use: Attic Remodel or Storage? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be honest \u2013 most of us could use more space in our home for recreation or rest. An attic is an untapped opportunity for many homeowners to expand their livable space into a guest room, office, or kids play space. But an attic remodel can cost big bucks. If your intent is more attic storage and better organization, there are still budget requirements, but you may be looking at an easier DIY. How do you decide on what to do with your attic space?

\u201cLook around your home and think about the storage space you currently have and what you are storing in it. Is it seasonal d\u00e9cor? Is it mementos and keepsakes?<\/em>\u201d Ashley suggests, \u201cSome people have very little items they need to store, so an attic could make a great renovation project to add square footage for your home to be used as a media room, game room, etc. Others have lots of things to store and very little space to do so, so the attic is necessary for the purpose of storage. Think about your priorities in your home and how you want to use the real estate you have to best serve you.<\/em>\u201d

Ashley\u2019s Pro Tip<\/strong>: When it comes to budget, \u201cmust-haves\u201d come first. Account for the cost of necessary items like organizational shelving, furniture, or flooring and see what\u2019s leftover before adding the fun stuff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.\nSort & Store <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After you\u2019ve determined the intention of your attic renovation, it\u2019s time to think about what you\u2019re going to keep, donate, or toss. Because whether you\u2019re using your space for storage or living, you\u2019ll need to clear it out to make upgrades. What\u2019s the best way to decide what to lose? Think frequency of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe main driver for me is when I last used an item. We\nhave a lot of seasonal d\u00e9cor in our attic that I know I\u2019ll use annually, so I\nkept that each season<\/em>,\u201d says Ashley. \u201cMy husband and I each have a box\nof childhood sentimental items we have kept. For items that aren\u2019t seasonal\nd\u00e9cor or sentimental, I consider when I last used it or whether I know I have a\nneed for it \u2013 if not, it goes! During this attic project, some items I have\ngotten rid of include a ceiling fan, several wall shelves, a nightstand, and an\nironing board. These were all taking up a lot of room in our attic for no\nreason at all!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
