Thank you to Elizabeth Johnsen, a customer of our CubeSmart store in Denver, CO, for sharing her story with us.
Elizabeth Johnsen has had her sights set on helping people gain mobility through prosthetics since her teens. A current student at CU Denver, her goal is to eventually receive her Master’s Degree in Prosthetics & Orthotics. Along the way, she is gaining experience receiving, organizing, storing, and shipping prosthetic parts for nonprofit the Range of Motion Project (ROMP) at its CubeSmart storage unit in southeast Denver.
“I know that what I’m doing here is allowing a lot of people to receive mobility they wouldn’t normally have access to,” she says with a big smile.
Most of Elizabeth’s work at the CubeSmart store consists of her unpacking and sorting donations that are mailed directly to the store itself. She also coordinates shipments of prosthetics and orthotic components with ROMP outreach trips to their clinics in Guatemala and Ecuador.
“I’ve been working here for a little over a year and typically swing by at least twice a week,” she tells us after a tour of ROMP’s amazingly full – but meticulously organized – unit. Shelves hold bins of prosthetics and orthotic components of every size, shape, and color that she carefully matches with patient and practitioner needs. Most of the donations are sent from patients, prosthetists, and prosthetic clinics.
“Having a place where we can store our inventory and receive new shipments is great,” she says. “I’m only here part-time, but we can still accept deliveries full-time. The CubeSmart staff has been very willing to help and is extremely supportive of our cause.”
Elizabeth also mentions the positives of having a location where volunteers can come and see what the organization does and get hands-on experience.
“Our CubeSmart unit is really convenient,” she adds. “Plus, you know your stuff will stay and be safe, even if you’re gone for months at a time.”
