6 Storage Ideas to Organize Your Garden Tools

Garages and sheds are notorious dumping grounds. Everything gets piled in and lives in a state of chaos. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Getting organized is the key to making the most of what space you have. With the right shelves, hooks and storage tubs, you can make organizing your garden tools in a shed, garage, or workshop a breeze.

Storage Bins and Tool Bags

Tool bags for garden tools are designed specially to hold your smaller tools together. Usually they’re wrapped by waterproof material. These are ideal for keeping your trowels and clippers safe and tidy.

For garden rake storage and other long-handled items like brooms, a clean trash can is a simple option. It keeps everything together and easy to access.

If you have shelves in the garage or shed, standing some smaller storage bins on those can be a useful option. Stackable containers allow you to make more of the space you have. They’re ideal for little things such as garden ties, small tools like pruning shears, faucet attachments, nails, and screws.

See-through storage bags add an extra layer of protection against moisture and spillage. Perfect for bags of compost, bird feed, and other items that once opened can get messy or deteriorate.

Tool Buckets

Tool buckets are a practical way to store small garden tools. You can buy buckets that are already fitted with an outer wrap – with handy pockets to slot garden tools into.

For an even more simple solution, store your tools in a bucket. It’s a great way to keep all your tools in one place. When you need them, just grab the handle and move around the garden taking them all with you as you go.

A large flexible plastic bucket with handles can be ideal to store things within the shed or garage. A smaller bucket is good if you do want to use it to carry tools around. If you want your bucket to be something you can easily move around, don’t get something too big. You’ll find it too heavy to lift and move once stocked with tools.

Pegboard Racks

Few shed or garage garden tool storage ideas are as versatile as a pegboard rack. To store garden tools on it, you’ll want to be sure you pick one made of a solid, robust material.

It can take a little work to set a pegboard rack up as you need it. They are easy to customize – add different storage hooks, trays, and other attachments when you need them.

All you need is a clear wall in a shed or garage to securely fix your board. If you don’t have outdoor storage space, you could attach your pegboard to a wall inside the house, such as in a porch or utility area.

Once it’s set up, you can add hooks, shelves and attach containers to the pegboard to house all your tools. Be aware of the amount of weight you put on your board, so you don’t accidentally go overboard. A pegboard loaded with heavy tools could be pretty dangerous if it comes loose.

Reused File Cabinet

A shed, garage or outhouse is the ideal place to give new life to an old file cabinet. Deep drawers are a great place to keep all your tools organized. And if your file cabinet has a lock, you can store chemicals you may use in your garden that you want out of reach from children.

Using other old bedroom or office furniture, such as shelving units, closets or drawer chests, also works well. A closet with the rail removed may be a good place to stand tall items. Be aware of the weight of items you put into your old furniture, to make sure it’s secure. If you’re filling a tall file cabinet or chest with heavy items, fix it to a solid wall. A falling piece of furniture loaded with garden tools can be dangerous.

Mailbox Tool Storage

A mailbox is a clever storage solution for small garden tools and allows you to access them easily. By keeping gardening gloves, a trowel and small pruning shears in the box, you can do a little tweaking without having to open the shed.

Another option is an old mail locker system or mail sorting unit. They provide compartments to keep all your small garden tools organized and easy to access.

Spring Clamps to Hang Items

When it comes to garden tool hanging ideas, spring clamps are a classic solution.  Spring clamps can be attached to walls or peg boards and used as a holder for brooms, drills, screwdrivers, rakes, and other items. Simple, cheap, and easy to attach, usually with a screw or two.

It’s worth putting a little research time into the best type of spring clamps to buy. Some may not last or be robust enough for the job. You may want to think about if they are likely to be exposed to moisture or damp and how they will cope.

Anything that rusts may not be ideal in this circumstance. Consider how secure the wall or mounting you are adding your spring clamps to is. Will it cope with the weight of the garden tools you wish to store on them?

If you’re struggling for space to fit all of your garden tools, a storage unit can be a useful way to keep them secure. A small storage unit could be a handy option for keeping lawn mowers and garden tools you won’t use until summer safe for the winter months.
