How to Pack for the Perfect Beach Day

June 30, 2025

An elite beach day starts long before your toes hit that deliciously warm sand – it starts with the ultimate beach packing list. The perfect beach landing pad doesn’t build itself!

Summer is well and truly upon us, so it’s time to haul your beach essentials out of your storage unit and run to the store to ensure you’ve got everything you need to check off your beach checklist.

Let’s unpack exactly what to bring to the beach to make a standard beach trip into a core memory.

Beach Day Essentials

Every beach day needs these core essentials. Let’s dive in:

Sun Protection

It doesn’t matter if you’re one of those (very lucky) people who the sun always kisses with the most golden tan – you need sun protection.

  • Sunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum SPF of 30+ and reapply often, even if it’s “Sport” or “Water” designated. If you’re using an aerosol bottle, make sure you cover yourself and anyone else evenly.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: Grab that big floppy hat and sunglasses. Not wearing a hat is a one-way ticket to heat exhaustion, and the glare of the sun against the water and light sand can be harsh on the eyes without protective sunglasses.
  • Umbrella or Beach Tent: Grab that beach umbrella out of storage or invest in a beach tent. Beach tents have gained a ton of popularity for beachgoers in recent years as a private, easy-to-assemble hut that keeps you sheltered from the wind and sun.

Hydration and Snacks

Lots of sweating, sand play, and swimming mean you need to keep your energy up. Walking barefoot in the sand can burn up to 50% more calories than walking on a flat surface, so hydration and healthy food are key. Make sure to add the following to your beach packing list:

  • Plenty of Water: Bring some iced water in an insulated tumbler to keep it nice and cold. Bonus points for adding an electrolyte packet to replenish much-needed minerals lost from sweating.
  • Easy Snacks: Keep it light, fresh, easy to store, and easy to clean. Think watermelon, grapes, apples, light deli sandwiches, turkey jerky, and trail mix.
  • Cooler Bag: Cooler bags are perfect for easy carrying – they’re not as bulky as their hardshell predecessors. Pack beverages, fruit, and other food items in here with some ice packs to keep things cool.

Towels and Seating

The landing pad for your beach trip can really make or break the experience. Bringing a towel is great, but what about when you need to dry off? Here’s what you need to add to your beach essentials:

  • Beach Towels: For best results, we recommend bringing two big beach towels in case one gets too wet or dirty to use. You can use the extra one as a pillow or a wrap.
  • Old Quilts or Blankets: Dig through your storage unit for some old, breathable blankets and quilts to create the ultimate lounge area – perfect if you’re going to the beach with friends or family. Use old sheets or towels to make ‘pillows’ or bring some old pillows that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. That way, you’ve got a soft surface to lie on, and you can use your towels for drying off.
  • Foldable Chairs or Mats: Totally optional for your landing pad, but a lightweight chair is perfect for sitting back and watching those waves roll on in. If you’ll be at the beach longer than a couple of hours, you’ll definitely want these to make a long day more comfortable.

Gear for Fun and Relaxation

So you’ve got the snacks and the comfort locked down – now what to bring to the beach for entertainment?

Entertainment

Even gazing at the waves can get a little dry after an hour or two – here are some ideas to keep things fun.

  • Waterproof Speakers: Charge up your favorite mini speaker and toss it into your beach bag because the perfect beach day starts with the perfect, easy-listening playlist.
  • Books and E-Readers: Grab your current read, your Kindle, Kobo, or tablet, and dive into a good book – we recommend diving into a fun mystery or romantic comedy.
  • Beach Games: Want to get active? Bring a Frisbee, a spike ball set, or even a small volleyball net. Be sure to stay hydrated, keep your head covered, and wear sunscreen while moving around in the sun.

Water-Friendly Accessories

Ready to play mermaids? Here are some beach gear ideas to make splashing around extra fun.

  • Snorkel Gear or Goggles: If you’re the type who loves to spend lots of time in the water, consider bringing some snorkel gear and/or goggles. Goggles will help protect your eyes from the saltwater, making exploring that much more enjoyable.
  • Inflatable Floats: If permitted by the swimming area, bring a floaty for yourself or one that holds multiple people for a fun afternoon of relaxing on the water. You’ll want to really ensure you’re doubled up on sunscreen and head coverings for this activity, as the water will act as a reflective surface for the sun.

Clothing and Extras for Comfort

At the beach, there’s nothing worse than a dirty, wet bathing suit. Here are a few ideas to ensure you maximize your comfort levels.

Smart Clothing Choices

A few comfy pieces can make all the difference. Make sure to add these articles of clothing to your beach packing list:

  • Swimwear: Pack an extra set in case the first gets too sandy or wet.
  • Comfy Clothing: The walk back from the beach can be a little uncomfortable (and humbling), so be sure to bring a change of breathable clothing.
  • Flip-Flops or Water Shoes: Easy to slip on and off, plus they’re great for rocky areas and hot sand.

Bonus Items That Make a Big Difference

These oft-forgotten items are a must for your beach checklist.

  • Portable Phone Charger: The heat, combined with extra use, can drain your phone battery pretty quickly. Bring a charging cord and power bank or invest in a MagSafe or magnetized portable charger.
  • First Aid Kit: Because you really just never know.
  • Trash Bags: Leave no trace of your beach landing pad.

Packing Tips to Stay Organized

A little packing strategy goes a long way, and the right bag makes a huge difference. Opt for a machine-washable, water-resistant mesh bag with plenty of compartments to keep your valuables safe. Alternatively, consider large, flexible totes for extra durability and easy cleaning.

In terms of activities, stay ahead of any curveballs by planning ahead. If you know you’ll be at the beach for a while, bring plenty of blankets, chairs, and an umbrella or tent for a respite from the hot sun. Get to the beach early to secure a top spot and bring the entertainment you know you’ll want during the day.

Family and Kid-Specific Tips

If you’re bringing the little ones to the beach, a few extra preparations can make the day run more smoothly.

Pack extra shade options, such as pop-up tents or additional umbrellas, to keep everyone cool and comfortable. Bring easy-to-pack and easy-to-clean snacks and drinks to minimize mess and fuss. Don’t forget a few beach toys, such as buckets and shovels, to keep them entertained while you keep an eye on them.

For the ride home, a dry change of clothes is an absolute must for the ride home — it’ll save you from dealing with damp, sandy car seats.

Let’s Go to the Beach

A little prep goes a long way to making your beach day unforgettable. A well-packed trunk is the secret to a stress-free day by the water.
